TYT CR-5UV Dual-Band Handheld Transceiver

2m/70cm • 5W • GPS • APRS • Bluetooth • Dual Receive • 1000 Channels • 3800 mAh Battery

The TYT CR-5UV is an advanced 5 W dual-band handheld transceiver designed specifically for Australian amateur radio operators.

Manufactured by TYT in partnership with Comtek Radio and configured specifically for Australian amateur radio operation, the CR-5UV combines conventional 2 m and 70 cm FM operation with built-in GPS, APRS, Bluetooth, dual receive, 1000 memory channels, cross-band repeater capability, spectrum scanning and a large colour display.

Unlike standard international versions of the radio, transmission is limited to the applicable Australian amateur bands, while the original wideband receive capability is retained. In VFO mode, repeater offsets and shift directions are configured to follow the WIA Australian Amateur Band Plan.

Every CR-5UV is supplied with Comtek CR-5UV Programming Software and a programming cable, providing an easy way to configure memory channels, repeaters, scan lists, zones and other programmable functions.

Configured for Australian Amateur Radio

The CR-5UV is not simply an international handheld with a different model number. The Australian Amateur Edition has been developed specifically for Australian amateur operators, with an Australian-specific operating configuration and dedicated programming software.

Transmit operation is restricted to the applicable Australian amateur allocations:

Band Transmit Frequency
2 metres 144.000–148.000 MHz
70 centimetres 430.000–450.000 MHz

The receiver retains the wideband coverage of the original TYT platform:

Mode Receive Coverage
AM 108–134 MHz
FM 108–580 MHz

This provides useful monitoring capability outside the amateur bands while restricting transmission to frequencies appropriate for Australian amateur operation.

In VFO mode, repeater offsets and shift directions are configured in accordance with the WIA Australian Amateur Band Plan, simplifying normal Australian repeater operation.

GPS and APRS

The CR-5UV incorporates built-in GPS and APRS capability, adding position reporting and data functions to its conventional FM voice communications.

The GPS receiver supports GPS, BeiDou and multi-system GNSS positioning modes and provides position, altitude and satellite information directly through the radio.

APRS can use either a fixed position or live GPS position for beacon transmission. The CR-5UV supports manual and automatic APRS beacon transmission, together with reception and decoding of APRS position reports.

Received APRS station information can include:

  • Callsign and SSID

  • Latitude and longitude

  • Distance

  • Altitude

  • Speed

  • Course

  • APRS station symbol

  • Time of beacon reception

The radio also incorporates TNC functionality, supporting KISS, GPWPL and UI Text data formats. TNC data can be used with compatible mobile, PC, mapping and APRS applications.

These capabilities make the CR-5UV particularly useful for portable operation, field activities, travelling, club events and other amateur applications where position reporting is valuable.

Bluetooth Connectivity

Built-in Bluetooth expands the CR-5UV's connectivity options beyond those of a conventional handheld transceiver.

Bluetooth can be used with compatible Bluetooth headsets and PTT devices, while Bluetooth data modes provide connectivity for supported TNC, mobile and PC applications.

The radio provides both Bluetooth Master and Slave operating modes, allowing Bluetooth to be configured according to the accessory or data application being used.

Dual Receive

The CR-5UV supports true dual receive, allowing Band A and Band B to receive two channels simultaneously.

It also provides Dual Standby and Single TRX operating modes, allowing its receive behaviour to be configured for different operating requirements.

This is particularly useful when monitoring a local repeater while simultaneously listening to another repeater, simplex frequency or calling channel.

1000 Memories, Zones and Scan Lists

With 1000 memory channels, the CR-5UV provides ample capacity for local and interstate repeaters, simplex channels, club frequencies and travelling configurations.

Channels can be organised into 16 zones of up to 128 channels, while the scanning system supports 16 scan lists of up to 128 channels each.

This provides considerable flexibility for organising a large channel collection without having to work through one continuous list of memories.

Spectrum Scanning

The CR-5UV includes a spectrum scanning function that provides a visual indication of radio activity around a selected centre frequency.

Different scanning ranges and frequency steps can be selected, and detected frequencies can be monitored and transferred directly to the VFO.

This is particularly useful at field days, club events and other locations where you want to identify nearby radio activity without knowing the exact operating frequency beforehand.

Cross-Band Repeater

The CR-5UV incorporates a cross-band repeater function.

With Band A and Band B operating on different frequency bands, the radio can retransmit received signals between VHF and UHF. Both unidirectional and bidirectional cross-band repeater modes are supported.

PC Programming Included

Every CR-5UV is supplied with Comtek CR-5UV Programming Software and a programming cable.

The software is matched specifically to the Australian firmware used in the CR-5UV. Programming software intended for other versions of the underlying radio may not operate correctly with the Australian CR-5UV.

PC programming provides a convenient way to:

  • Create and edit memory channels

  • Configure repeater channels

  • Name channels

  • Configure scan lists

  • Organise channels into zones

  • Set transmit power

  • Configure signalling and other programmable functions

  • Save and restore radio configurations
